Who We Serve

We work with case managers serving three populations who have verifiable income and need stable transitional housing as a bridge to permanent placement.

Veterans

Veteran-Owned. Transitional housing for veterans receiving VA disability compensation, pension benefits, or VASH housing vouchers. We work directly with VA social workers and veteran service organizations to coordinate placements.

VA disability • VA pension • VASH vouchers

Social Security Recipients

Stable housing for individuals receiving SSI or SSDI who need time and support to transition from crisis to permanent housing. Rent is paid from their monthly benefit — this is not charity. It's a self-sustaining model that works.

SSI • SSDI • Social Security Disability

Reentry Clients

Housing for individuals transitioning out of incarceration who have employment income or transitional assistance. We provide the stable address that makes everything else — a job, a bank account, a lease — possible.

Employment income • Transitional assistance

South Carolina has 1,334 people without a home.

Across South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, communities face a shortage of transitional housing options. Georgia is our primary focus. Existing shelters provide beds for a night, but a bed isn't a solution. People need stability long enough to get a job, save money, and find a permanent place to live.

That takes time. That takes support. That takes a real room with a door that locks.

Eligibility & How It Works

Helping Hands is a self-sustaining transitional housing program — not a shelter or charity. Residents pay rent from their benefits or income. This model keeps beds available long-term and gives residents the dignity of paying their own way.

Our program is designed for people who need stability to transition to permanent housing — not people who need emergency crisis intervention.

Program Requirements

  • Verifiable income source — VA benefits, SSI/SSDI, active employment, or transitional assistance
  • Long-term commitment to permanent housing — residents stay the full program duration or until permanent housing is secured
  • Willingness to work toward permanent housing — active participation in the housing transition plan
  • Referral from case manager — we coordinate directly with your agency for placement

On income & rent

Residents pay rent from their monthly benefits or wages. SSI/SSDI recipients, veterans receiving disability or pension, and employed reentry clients all qualify. Rent is structured to remain affordable within benefit amounts — residents keep money in their pocket to save toward permanent housing.

What we provide

Every resident gets more than a room. They get the tools to not need us anymore.

Double Rooms

7 double rooms in a real home. Not a cot in a gymnasium. A place with dignity, privacy, and stability.

Transportation to Work

Rides to job interviews, work shifts, and employment-related appointments. Lack of transportation is the silent barrier that keeps people stuck.

Job Placement

Active help finding employment that matches skills and availability. Not a job board. Real placement assistance with local employers.

Permanent Housing

From day one, we work toward the exit. Every resident gets help finding, applying for, and securing a permanent place to live.

💰

Flat Monthly Rate

One all-inclusive rate covers your room, 3 meals a day, 2 snacks, Wi-Fi, computer access, TV, and house phone. No hidden fees. No tiered pricing.

NP

Mental Health NP

Remote Nurse Practitioner available via telehealth to support residents' mental and behavioral health needs. Confidential, resident-centered care built into the program.

Counselor

Counselor

Licensed counselor available remotely for individual and group sessions. Residents get structured support for the emotional side of transition — not just the practical.
